A tribute to Dr. Marcia Glass
Dr. Marcia Glass, a dermatologist and associate clinical professor in periodontics, made an indelible mark on the Stomatology Center at Baylor College of Dentistry for more than 20 years.
Glass passed away on Dec. 17, 2006 at age 68 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She is missed not only for her knowledge and dedication, but also for her kind and gentle manner that touched the hearts of many.
Glass joined the BCD faculty in 1985, adding invaluable expertise to the Stomatology Center. Bridging the gap between medicine and dentistry, she offered important perspective to the management of patients with medical conditions that affect the oral cavity. She contributed to the education of residents completing training in periodontics as well as oral and maxillofacial pathology, not only providing diagnostic expertise but also supporting their clinical research and encouraging them to publish. Glass’ reputation led to regular rotations through the Stomatology Center by medical students and dermatology residents. She was a champion of dentistry and recognized the value of teamwork in the management of patients with oral medicine problems.
Born in Australia in 1938, she was the eldest of three sisters, all of whom went on to have successful careers in medicine. Following in the footsteps of her father, also a physician, Glass completed medical school at age 22 and was one of only six women to graduate from the University of Sydney that year. She completed her residency in Sydney and married Dr. Kenneth Glass, an orthopedic surgeon, in 1963. They had three sons and eventually made Dallas their home.
Glass focused her energy on raising her family for the next 15 years and, in 1979, decided to resume her medical career. She completed a residency in dermatology at Parkland Memorial Hospital in 1982 followed by a two-year research fellowship in immuno-dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Upon completion of her training, Glass started a rewarding career that spanned more than 20 years as a practicing dermatologist in Dallas.
Appreciation is extended to Dr. Jackie Plemons (BCD ’86, ’88), associate professor in periodontics, and assistant director of the Stomatology Center, for submitting this tribute to Dr. Glass.
