BCD group ‘Races for the Cure’
The Baylor College of Dentistry chapter of the Texas Association of Women Dentists formed a team to participate in the 23rd annual Komen Dallas Race for the Cure, which was held Oct. 15. Sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Dallas race is part of the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world.

Race for the Cure

BCD team members included dental students, faculty, staff, family members and friends.

Third-year students included Amy Akers, Penelope Bustos, TAWD president Shireen Irani, Trisha Janak, Jonathan Kimes, Kris Liggett and his mother, and Elissa Hudspeth and her mother.

Second-year students included Mandie Boothe, Andrea Janik-Keith, Julie Longoria, Alejandra Rivas, team organizer Erin Stuewer and her friend Alex Forshey, Rosamond Tomlinson and Candice Zerby.

First-year students included Shelby Nelson and Janna Miller.

Also participating in the race were Moira Allen, director of student affairs; Barbara Cole, wife of BCD dean, Dr. James S. Cole; Kathy Ivie, lead dispensing technician, and her sister, Pat Lucas; and Dr. Margaret Yanus, assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences and TAWD faculty adviser.

TAWD members plan to get an earlier start next year recruiting members for the team, says Yanus. “It was an awesome experience, and next year we want to try to get more faculty, staff and students involved.”

Since its origination in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure has grown from one local race with 800 participants in Dallas to a series of more than 100 races with more than 1.3 million people participating. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds funds Dallas-area breast cancer education, screening and treatment projects for medically underserved women. The remaining 25 percent supports the national foundation’s award and research grant program, which provides funding for groundbreaking breast cancer research and innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.
